The circular nets are fish farms. This is other issue on the BC coast that's causing an uproar. Some see economic opportunity and a means of providing low cost protein to people. I was disturbed to learn that it takes three or four pounds of fishmeal to grown one pound of farmed salmon; that doesn't seem very efficient. Also, the flesh color of farmed fish is a pale gray so it has to be dyed.
